Adjusting for Vacation, Holidays and Unpaid Time

A salary covers paid holidays and vacation, so the standard formula gives your rate over all paid weeks. If you want your rate on the hours you actually work, use the days you do not work box in the calculator. With 15 non-working days at 8 hours each, a $50,000 salary works out to $50,000 / (2,080 - 120) = $25.51 an hour on hours actually worked.

Part-Time and Overtime Work

For a part-time schedule, use your real weekly hours. $40,000 a year at 30 hours a week is $40,000 / (30 x 52) = $25.64 an hour. Hourly workers who earn overtime should use the overtime paycheck calculator.

Federal law requires overtime for non-exempt employees. The federal exempt salary threshold is $684 a week ($35,568 a year), and duties also matter, so being salaried does not automatically exclude overtime.
