What This Income Tax Calculator Estimates
It estimates income tax on wages: federal income tax after the standard deduction, state income tax, Social Security, Medicare and state payroll programs. It shows your effective tax rate (total tax divided by gross pay) and the federal marginal rate on your last dollar. It does not include investment income, self-employment tax, itemized deductions or credits other than the child tax credit.

Marginal Rate vs Effective Rate
Your marginal rate is the rate on your next dollar. Your effective rate is your total tax divided by your income and is always lower. Moving into a higher bracket only taxes the income above the threshold. See federal income tax withholding.
State Income Tax
Nine states, including Texas and Florida, do not tax wages. Others use flat or graduated rates. Pick your state to see its effect, or open a page from the state list.

Income Tax vs Payroll Tax
Income tax funds general government. Social Security and Medicare are separate payroll taxes on wages. This calculator shows them together so you can see the full amount taken from a paycheck. Details: paycheck taxes explained.
Example Scenarios
A single filer on $85,000 in California pays federal, California and payroll taxes. Compare the same salary in Texas to see the state effect.
